What is WHEY

[Extracted from Wisegeek]

Whey is a by-product of cheese making. It is formed when the curds separate from the milk or cream. After the cheese curds are formed, the remaining liquid is called whey. This liquid is watery and thin. Sometimes whey has a tinge of bluish color, but this depends on the quality and type of milk used.

Whey can be made from any type of milk, with cow's milk being the most popular in the United States. Goat's milk is commonly used in the Middle East and in some desert areas, camel's milk is used in the cheese making process.

Whey is also formed in the making of yogurt, being the thin liquid that forms on top of the settled yogurt. This can be drained off and added to shakes, smoothies or other liquid drinks for added protein.

Whey is often used in the making of ricotta cheese. Using vinegar or another acidic liquid, the whey is heated and the addition of the vinegar will cause the fats to congeal into the curds that create the cheese.

Whey is an excellent source of protein, vitamins, minerals and lactose. It is the base of many protein drinks for athletes or others wishing to build or repair muscle tissues. Whey is also an important supplement for those who have limited mobility in the limbs as it contributes to the prevention of atrophy of muscular cells.

Whey is also used in pet foods as a source of protein and fats. It contributes to a healthy coat and proper muscle development.

Most people are familiar with the old nursery rhyme, Little Miss Muffet as she was eating her curds and whey. This type of cheese would be similar to cottage cheese and made by allowing milk to sour and naturally separate into curds and whey. While this method of making cheese may not sound appetizing to most people, it is a method used around the world in many different cultures.

Whey can be an important addition to anyone's diet. Those that have difficulty in finding the time to eat right or have other dietary concerns such as protein needs in a vegetarian diet, will find whey an excellent supplement.

Is Meditation an Essential Part of Practicing Yoga

by Timothy
Patterns in the Sand by Brad Gibson
Do you need to meditate? Can you achieve all or most of the same benefits from just practicing asana, restorative yoga, Savasana, and/or pranayama? Is it worth even trying if you feel like you're no good at it? We get questions like these at the blog from time to time, so I figured I'd tackle them today.

I can't help but notice that people often talk about yoga and meditation as two separate practices. But according to Patanjali, the great codifier of yoga, meditation was an integral part of the practice. By yoga, of course, most people in the U.S. mean asana, which is why people say yoga and meditation. And since most asana classes don't include any meditation, many yoga practitioners have looked outside of yoga, often to Buddhism, if they're interested in learning more. There's nothing wrong with that, but I think people forget that the Buddha was a yogi before he became the Buddha!

Meditation gets a lot of press as an effective tool to de-stress, to calm the mind and the nervous system. That's certainly true, but if that were all meditation had to offer, you could hardly view the practice as vital, since we've got so many tools in yoga that can foster relaxation: asana, breathing practices, chanting and restoratives to name a few.

To many dedicated yogis, however, meditation is the crown jewel of the practice. They recommend asana mostly because it prepares the body for meditation, to sit up straight comfortably for long periods of time. All the high levels of samadhi—absorption as it is sometimes translated—the eighth of the eight limbs of yoga that Patanjali describes in the Yoga Sutras, are said to happen only in meditation. And, more specifically, from its long-term practice over the course of years, even decades.

I have been meditating for a long time, and it has become in many ways the most delicious part of my practice. It didn't start out that way. My mind was very busy when I began, and it was extremely difficult for me to keep my attention from flitting from idea to idea. And it was hard to find comfort sitting in one place, without frequent position adjustments and fidgeting. Many people who try to meditate get discouraged at this point and give up. That, I believe, is a mistake. As with a lot of other areas of yoga, hanging in when things are challenging, even discouraging, can bring rewards. Yoga teaches that it is by strengthening our weaknesses that we become more balanced.

Meditation can be a fabulous tool to study your mind and slowly gain more control over it. (I'm not just talking about the conscious mind, which is mostly what gets dealt with, often quite helpfully, in psychotherapy, but the unconscious mind, which hugely impacts our behavior and happiness.) The first lesson for most of us on the meditation cushion is just how unruly our minds are, and how hard it is to maintain our focus for more than a few seconds. Seeing that reality may be uncomfortable, but it's the first step toward eventually changing it.

And there is real benefit in feeling your mind running all over the place, wanting to get up and move, and continuing to stay seated anyway, trying to bring your attention back to whatever you're focusing on, whether that's your breath, an image, or a mantra. Studies of the Relaxation Response, which were performed on people practicing a demystified form of yogic mantra meditation, have shown that even when practitioners don't feel they are doing it well, they gain the physiological benefits of lower blood pressure, heart rates, etc.

Even after years of practice, some days my mind is still all over the place. But usually, if I stay at it, things eventually settle down. One reason why some experts recommend 20 minutes of meditation daily is that it often takes about that long to settle down. But the more you practice the easier it gets.

You might wonder where you will find the extra time to add a 20-minute practice to your already busy schedule. Well, first off, you don't need to do it for that long. Even a few minutes in the beginning starts to build up the habit. Over time you can slowly increase the time you sit. Interestingly, about a decade ago when I upped my practice to an hour a day, I discovered that I began to need about an hour less sleep each night, as if the meditation were giving me some of sleep's restorative effects. It felt like I was getting to meditate for free, without carving any time out of my day!

In my yoga therapy work, I often recommend meditation, but not always. Sometimes when someone is very anxious or seriously depressed, if they attempt to close their eyes and go inward, they may go into an unpleasant—and potentially counterproductive—state of mind. But if we can use other tools, like breath and asana, to improve the acute situation (along with whatever medication, therapy or other tools they are employing), I will often try to add meditation later. I have come to believe that for the long-term care of anxiety and depression, meditation may be the most powerful tool we have. It gets to places that asana simply can't, as powerful as asana can be.  But unlike a lot of meditators, I don't think you should give up your asana practice once you get into meditating. Because asana also gets to some places that meditation can't, like your hip flexors, for example!

The bottom line is that the different yogic tools appear to work together in a synergistic fashion. Meditating can make you a better asana practitioner, and doing asana can help deepen your meditation. And regular pranayama can help both of them!

In my next post, I'll give more specifics on how to begin a meditation practice. If there are particular themes you'd like to me address, please let us know.

Counting Calories Vs Counting Macros Which Is Better For Weight Loss

By Russ Howe

When you are trying to lose weight, you will inevitably come across the debate of counting calories versus counting macronutrients.

Yes, macros are the fitness world's new buzz word.

But does counting your macros really matter to weight loss? Or can you still bank on results so long as you lower your daily calorie intake?

In today's post, we will take a look and establish the facts.

Weight Loss Tips That Work

If you are new to the fitness world, you may be unfamiliar with macronutrients in general. This is the term used to describe the food groups you consume. There are three groups in total - protein, fat and carbohydrates. Each group does a different thing.

1. What Is Protein Used For?

Protein is the most important macronutrient for building lean muscle tissue. So it's no surprise that most people who go to the gym supplement their diet with protein shakes, right? But protein also serves the purpose of speeding up your metabolism, helping you to burn more fat throughout the day.

Suffice to say, protein should be a mainstay in your diet and considered your macro of choice when looking for a snack throughout the day.

2. What Is Fat Used For?

Much like protein, fat plays an important role in the muscle building process. You see, without the correct levels of testosterone and cortisol in the body, we could eat as much protein as we wanted and train as hard as possible only to see lackluster results. Fat is responsible for regulating these hormones, so don't ignore it.

3. What Do Carbohydrates Do?

It's no longer the year 2000, so you need not fear carbs like the plague. Despite the fact that the early years of the millennium were plagued with bogus science that claimed carbohydrates would lead to greater fat storage around the midsection, modern science clearly demonstrates that carbohydrates are a vital food group in a healthy diet. Further still, they provide you with your body's preferred source of energy, so cutting carbs from your diet is a bad move.

So I encourage you to discard the many myths surrounding carbs. None of them are correct.

So now that you know the roles played by each food group, is counting your macros enough to lead to weight loss? Or do calories still matter?

Despite the fact that counting macros is very popular, your calorie intake is still the deciding factor.

By getting the right amount of each macronutrient, you will undoubtedly experience a better response to your training and it is a good way to boost the results of your diet. But your calorie intake is still the bigger picture.

If you are eating too many calories per day, you will not lose weight.

WHY IS HEALTH TOO SMALL A THING FOR THEIR PLANS AND MANIFESTOS

A nation full of unhealthy citizens, is unhealthy in itself.

Everywhere you go in Nigeria at the moment, the only thing you hear is "CHANGE", "POSITIVE CHANGE". The February 2015 election draws so near, every political party with their aspiring candidates has tuned to the lyrics of this 'change' music, "all I want to bring is change". . .

This has become a tradition, Nigerians are used to it. But is the coming tenure going to be any better than the ones Nigeria has seen over the decades?
After careful listening, studying and reviewing of the manifestos and 'proposed' visions of the aspiring presidential candidates for Nigeria, it so saddens me that there's not even an iota of plan for the HEALTH of the Nigerian citizens.

LET'S ANALYZE THIS TOGETHER

• Despite Nigeria being the 24th largest economy in the world, per capita income is low; Nigerians continue to struggle with poverty, inequality and electricity shortages.

The Nigeria health sector is beset with so many problems; doctors are on strike, scores of lives have been lost due to this breakdown. An average Nigerian using government hospitals is now forced to seek expensive treatment at private ones, adding to the increasing poverty status of the country, yet no one is talking about this.

• For decades now, the Nigeria health care system remains inefficient, stagnant and deteriorating by the day. I'm still yet to find a plan on someone's agenda to fix this problem.

• Nigeria remains the only African country still battling with polio. Nigeria is ranked 4th among the 22 worst affected countries in the world and the first in Africa. As such, about 460,000 new TB cases occur yearly in Nigeria, yet we're talking about 'change'.

• The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), which is meant to see that every Nigerian citizen has access to free health care, has failed in a huge way, and is even majorly supported by NGOs and Donor/Volunteering organizations, not the government.

• Pharmaceutical drugs  get destroyed in stored places. Why? Something has gone wrong - against the 'store in cool and dry place' warning on their labels. These drugs have been heated up, due to poor power supply which is meant to enable storage in a good environment with an ideal temperature. These drugs - whose chemical structures have been altered - are sold to 'unknowing' citizens. They buy and use; the end result is worse than the beginning. This has resulted in more deaths (especially in children), than the illness itself.

• Nigeria's public health care system lacks enough skilled man power as a result of the "brain drain" syndrome. Nigerian medical practitioners are leaving in search for greener pastures (a more enabling environment).

• Infant mortality rates have been increasing from 85 per 1000 live births in 1982, to 87 in 1990, 93 in 1991, 100 in 2003, according to the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, 2003. In 2007, the Federal Ministry of Health reported 110 deaths per 1000 live births.

• Nigeria's under-five mortality rate is 197 deaths per 1000 live births, and HIV, malaria and diarrheal disease account for about a quarter of the deaths among adults (and malaria in children). Now, new reported cases of flu in some regions have added to the number.

We can go on and on non-stop on this issue, but here's something:

If 'anyone' leader wants true change for his nation, he starts by putting the nation's citizens - his followers - on their feet first. A leader of sick people is a sick person himself, and his nations is 'clinically' dead.

Health is wealth, they say. If a 'manifesto' or 'vision' has all the money to spread around, but not to health reforms, then it becomes a situation where we all have to queue or lie in hospital beds, instead of being at our work places or educational environments. Oh! Sorry, which hospitals?!

You talk of security, economy, etc, if a good percentage of the Nigerian Military/Navy/Air-force/
Police, are down with an epidemic, then who stands to raise the guns?

It's time we started talking about 'real change' instead of 'recycled change' - same things, same processes, but different administrators. Change is only going to come when Nigeria itself is healthy.

Let's be health mindful.

OCD A to Z I is For Indecision

Indecision Stole My Life

Indecision OCD has eaten up a lot of time in my life. I'll get the thought that I might make a mistake, or the wrong decision, and my anxiety rises, and my compulsions consist of checking items closely for flaws, reading labels repeatedly, picking up every item, making sure I look at every rack in the store, plus mental rituals of figuring out which is the best choice, and interminable research.

I am much better at making decision now, after doing exposures, and listening to exposure scripts on my ipod, and the "high tech"(as my therapist calls it) tool of flipping a coin to make certain decisions. If I am tired or vulnerable, I am more likely to start agonizing over ordinary decisions. Yesterday, I was in the consignment store looking for t-shirts, and found myself looking at all the racks twice, even though intellectually I knew that there wasn't anything. For so many years I feared "missing something valuable or important" and it's a hard habit to break.

I remind myself to make at least one decision at the grocery store by flipping a coin--this cereal or that cereal, buy this item, or leave it on the shelf. I remember the days when I'd pace the store for 1/2 hr trying to make one decision, and how if I thought of a criteria for my choice(ie. price), I'd start to debate in my mind if that was the right criteria to use. I'd break into a sweat, my face would get hot, and whatever else I needed to do in my life was put on hold. I hated myself for wasting so much time, and I'd come home exhausted and demoralized.

OCD often is about certainty. I want to know for certain I've made the right choice, in advance, before I ever choose the item, or use it, or whether I've chosen the right action for all time. We don't get that kind of omniscience. Even in the grips of indecision, I knew that sometimes I chose something, and it sucked, even after all my compulsions, but it took encouragement from my therapist and friends to take the leap, and take my best guess, or leave something to chance, or not know an encyclopedia of information for every choice I made. We trick ourselves into believing that we can predict the future with certainty, if only we tried hard enough.

Is Yoga Really Dangerous for Men Dr Timothy McCalls Response to William Broad

by Timothy
Man in Unwounded Warrior 3 Pose by Nina Zolotow

Science reporter William Broad, who a year ago woke the proverbial sleeping (downward facing) dog of the yoga world with his NY Times Magazine article How Yoga Can Wreck Your Body, is back at it. This time he's claiming—based on a review of injury statistics—that men are at much greater risk of serious injury from yoga (see Wounded Warrior Pose). The claim may or may not be true, but I don’t think you can really tell from the data he presents. I plan on writing more about this topic in my next email newsletter, but wanted to respond to Nina's query for the blog today.

As Broad makes clear in his book, The Science of Yoga (from which the first Times yoga article was excerpted), the subject of his inquiry is the physical practice of yoga as found in most classes. He’s not talking about meditation, chanting, selfless service or spiritual development. Even so, styles of asana practice, different teachers and classes vary enormously. It’s my feeling that Broad's failure to account for these differences could entirely explain his findings.

Back when I was taking a lot of classes of different styles (which I'm not doing anymore, so if things have changed I’d love to get feedback from readers), I found that in the more meditative and restorative classes, I was often one of the only males in the room. But in some of the more vigorous and acrobatic classes, the gender split was closer to even. Thus, men having a higher incidence of yoga injuries could simply be a reflection of their favoring the kinds of classes where injuries seem more common, and not actually reflect any greater vulnerability to injury.

It is also my experience (and that of most yoga teachers I’ve spoken with) that people who are more flexible are generally at greater risk of injury, particularly for injuries like hamstring muscle tears, and overstretching of the ligaments. It varies from person to person obviously, but on average men are much stiffer than women, and seemingly less prone to these types of injuries.

Many yoga injuries—again based on my experience, since we lack data—happen when people are trying too hard to achieve a particular result. Your foot won’t go into Lotus pose, for example, so you pull a little harder to get it into position, and in the process tear ligaments in your knee. But before that happens, the body almost always gives warning signs, such as pain or strained breathing. If you decide to ignore them and power your way through, problems may result. Both men and women can do this, but if I had to guess I’d say men are more likely to, so in this way may be at higher risk.

William Broad loves to create controversy. Beyond claiming that yoga can wreck your body, he has also written that yoga can make you fat, and that the entire practice started out as a sex cult (neither of which is true). Statistically speaking, if Broad’s analysis is correct (and given the methodological problems in how he did his analysis—see Is Yoga Really Dangerous for Men? Dr. Ram Rao Weighs In—I don't think we can know), men may indeed be at higher risk of injuries when practicing asana, but this may miss a larger truth. My guess is that if a man practices less demanding forms of yoga, or any style of yoga in a less aggressive and more mindful way, that his risk probably isn’t any greater than that of a woman, and may even be less. Uh oh, there’s a potential future headline for Mr. Broad: Women at Greater Risk of Yoga Injuries! You heard it here first….

So what is blood pressure anyway

by Baxter
Arctic Moon by Michele Macartney-Filgate
If you read yoga magazines or read online articles about yoga and your health, you often come across a warning to avoid this or modify that yoga asana if you suffer from high blood pressure or hypertension another term used for high blood pressure). But it turns out that there are a lot of differing opinions about how and what to change about a typical yoga practice if you have hypertension (HTN), and not a great deal of agreement on the best approach to take. However, before we get into that, I thought it would be helpful to discuss what blood pressure is, and how it is determined, as well as why HTN needs to be addressed either via lifestyle changes or medical intervention.

So, what is blood pressure? Well, it is a measurement we take—usually in your upper arm via a blood pressure cuff—that measures the pressure in the arteries of your arm. When you are sitting or standing with your arms at your sides, the place where blood pressure reading is taken is in line with your heart and its main artery, the thoracic aorta. Now we are measuring the pressure downstream in an artery in the arm, but it seems to correlate well with the pressures inside the heart and aorta. The top number of a blood pressure reading, called the systolic blood pressure, is the amount of pressure the blood in your arteries is exerting on the elastic, stretchy walls of the artery when the heart is at its maximum point of contraction. On average, it runs around 120mmHg’s of mercury in a normal healthy person. The bottom number, called the diastolic blood pressure, is the pressure at the time the heart is most relaxed between beats and is filling with more blood coming in from the body and lungs. A healthy average for that number is 80.  So, if your blood pressure, on average over the course of the day, is at 120/80 or below, it is said to be in the normal range.

Via observations and studies, if your blood pressure averages 140/90 or above over the course of the day, you are said to have high blood pressure or hypertension. If you fall between 120/80 and 140/90, you are now said to have a condition called “pre-hypertension,” a no man’s land where it seems you are at a greater risk of developing HTN over time. More on HTN and why it’s important later.

Let’s go back to the concept of blood pressure for a few more moments. Your blood pressure is not a constant figure, but changes as your physical, mental and emotional activities change. It often goes up during exercise, stressful situations, and emotionally charged interactions, as well as varying with your body position of reclining, sitting or standing. It must vary dynamically to accommodate our changing situations throughout the day. Maintaining the proper blood pressure for our changing needs is a complex system that involves many of the body’s systems, including hormones, brain activity, and specialized receptors for pressure in the some of the biggest arteries in the body, called baroreceptors. As these various components of the blood pressure regulation interact, they result in dynamic fluid changes within the blood vessels and heart, via changing the blood flow in the vessels, the heart rate and the intensity of the contraction of the heart itself. Other organs also get involved, such as the kidneys, which are asked to help lower blood pressure at times by filtering out more water from the blood to decrease the overall amount of fluid in the system. Other parts of our nervous system can also influence the blood pressure readings. Your autonomic nervous system, composed of the two opposing and balancing parts, the sympathetic (Flight, Fight or Freeze response) and the parasympathetic (Rest and Digest response), can either increase or decrease your blood pressure, depending on how activated they are.

A few more thoughts on the general topic of blood pressure. Although we have defined the situation where blood pressure is elevated above the normal level and is considered potentially dangerous if left untreated, the opposite situation can also exist. That is, your blood pressure can be lower than normal, and this situation is called hypotension. Highly trained runners, especially long distance runners, can have blood pressures that average 100/60 or even lower and feel no worse for the wear. However, in other situations, hypotension can create symptoms that indicate it is not a normal adaptation to good aerobic fitness, such as lightheadedness, dizziness on standing and fainting. So next time, we will look at the conditions of hypertension and hypotension in more detail, and begin to discuss how yoga could fit into plan for better health for these students. Special thanks today to both Shari Ser and PubMed for their insights on blood pressure, as well as all my teachers back at UC College of Medicine in Ohio!

What is Angioplasty and Stenting

[Extracted from www.vascular.co.nz]

An angioplasty is a procedure where a balloon is passed into your artery on the end of a tube (catheter) and is inflated (blown up) to treat a narrowed or blocked artery. The initiator of this technique was Charles Dotter, a radiologist in Oregon who started this work in 1964. The angioplasty technique means that surgery may be avoided in many cases. There are two techniques for performing angioplasty - transluminal and subintimal. In the transluminal technique the balloon is placed in the centre of the artery (in the lumen) where blood would normally flow.

Angioplasty of left common iliac artery

In subintimal angioplasty (Bolia, 1989) the balloon is intentionally placed within the layers of the arterial wall. As far as the patient is concerned, angioplasty is very similar to an angiogram except that a slightly bigger catheter is used and therefore the risks of bleeding are slightly greater. For this reason, in most cases, you will be asked to stay overnight. You will usually be asked to start taking aspirin before you are admitted as this makes the blood less sticky. A common dose is 75 mg per day. If you have a stomach ulcer or are allergic to aspirin, please tell your doctor. The angiogram opposite shows the artery on the left before angioplasty and on the right following angioplasty.

During the angioplasty

Angioplasty takes a little longer than simple angiography and you may feel the doctor changing, and pushing, catheters in and out of your groin artery. Although this is occasionally a little uncomfortable, it is not usually too painful. Once in position the artery will be stretched by inlating the balloon. This is a special balloon (Gruentzig balloon) that will only inflate to a fixed diameter which will vary depending on the size of the artery being treated. The reason for this is that the fixed diameter prevents overinflation of the balloon and reduces the risk of rupturing the artery. If there appears to be a good angiographic result no further procedures may be necessary. Sometimes, if the appearance of the treated artery is not ideal the situation can be improved or salvaged by inserting a special device called a stent to keep the artery open. This is just a small metal tube that expands in your artery to keep the area open and allow more blood to flow through. Stents appear to be especially useful in larger arteries above the level of the hip joint.

They can be used in arteries in the thigh but results are mixed and it should not be a routine procedure at this level of the leg. An editorial in the British Journal of Surgery recently concluded that "doctors have not the slightest clue whether primary stenting for arterial occlusive disease below the inguinal ligament (groin area) is of any real use" (Reekers 2008).

After the angioplasty

Unless there is a contraindication most patients should be taking aspirin. In some cases Heparin injections (anticoagulation) will be given for 24 hours to prevent the blood clotting at the site of the angioplasty. Rarely you may require warfarin tablets to thin the blood for a few months. You will normally be allowed home the following day. If you are given heparin or warfarin this may delay your departure by a few days. There is a growing trend to use clopidogrel to improve angioplasty success in leg arteries as it does seem to be important in patients undergoing coronary angioplasty in the heart. There is no evidence that clopidogrel is helpful following lower limb angioplasty.

You will be seen again in the clinic by your surgeon to assess the success of the angioplasty and to decide upon any further treatments. Unfortunately, in about 10% of cases, angioplasty is not successful and other treatments will need to be considered. In addition, even where successful angioplasty has been performed, there is a risk that the area in the artery will narrow down again. After one year, about 20-40% of arteries will have re-narrowed. In some cases, it may be possible to repeat the angioplasty at that time although in others this may not be possible. Very rarely, if angioplasty does not work, the circulation may actually worsen. If this is a particular risk in your case, your surgeon and /or radiologist will discuss the risks with you.

What are the possible side effects/complications ?

Bleeding – a small amount of bleeding sometimes occurs when the catheter is removed. Before the procedure is finished, the radiologist will ensure, by pressing on the artery, that all bleeding has completely stopped. Occasionally this bleeding can cause a small lump around the groin and commonly causes some bruising in the skin for a few days after the procedure. This is normal and will clear up on its own. Serious bleeding is very uncommon.

False aneurysm - rarely a pulsating lump develops in the groin at the site where the catheter was inserted into the artery. This is because bleeding took place after the catheter was removed. The clot produced forms a small sac with liquid blood in the centre. This blood pulses because it is connected to the artery through the hole made by the catheter. The sac with blood in the centre is called a false aneurysm. These days this problem can usually be treated by a simple injection into the sac to make the liquid blood in the centre form a clot and block the small hole in the artery. Thrombin is the naturally occurring blood clotting agent which is injected. It is usually very effective.

Pain/Discomfort – local anaesthetic is injected into the skin just before the catheter is placed into the artery. This should take away any severe pain, but it is likely you may feel some gentle pushing and pulling during the procedure. The blood vessels themselves do not feel the guiding wire or catheter. Injecting the dye sometimes causes a sensation of warmth, but this usually lasts only a few seconds.

Reactions to the dye – Reactions to modern dyes apart from the sensation of warmth are very uncommon. Various reactions and allergies can still occur and the staff are fuly trained and equipped to deal with any reaction which may occur. Reactions may include skin rashes, vomiting, asthma, low blood pressure and disturbances of heart beat and kidney damage. Kidney damage is a real risk but only inpatients with kidney function already impaired. If your kidney function is normal no special precautions are required. If your kidney function is abnormal then patients are routinely given intravenous fluids for some hours before the procedure. This not only dilutes the dye as it passes through the kidneys but also acclelerates the passage of dye throught the kidney lessening the risk of damage. Other treatments have been tried to reduce kidney injury but there is no evidence they are effective.

Damage to blood vessels – this can occur during angioplasty especially if the artery is already badly diseased. The catheter may make a hole in the blood vessel or strip the lining from the blood vessel. Usually these problems can be dealt with by the radiologist at the time of the procedure. If it is not possible to deal with the problem in radiology then an operation may be required.

Nerve effects– sometimes the local anaesthetic can numb main nerves in the front of the thigh, causing numbness going down the leg and weakness. This will wear off after an hour or so.

Equipment failure – it is theoretically possible for the catheter or its guiding wire to break and leave a fragment inside the body. Procedures are available to deal with this eventuality in the radiology department but occasionally surgery may be required. Failure of technique – occasionally it is not possible to perform the angioplasty. This may be because the artery is too diseased. Sometimes inserting a metal stent to hold the artery open can be helpful, especially for larger arteries in the pelvis.

Blood clots – blood clots can form at the angioplasty site within the artery. These can usually be dealt with by using enzymes that dissolve the lot, but can sometimes be a problem which can cause the circulation to deteriorate.

Kidney damage - Damage can occur to cells in the kidney during an angiogram. This can lead to a deterioration in kidney function if your kidneys are already diseased. The cause of the damage is the special radio-opaque dye that is injected into the arteries so that they can be seen with X-rays. Although other dyes are available (gadolinium) they are probably no safer than conventional dyes. If the doctors know your kidneys may be at risk during an angiogram, they can reduce the risks of damage by giving extra fluids in an intravenous drip before during and after your angiogram.

Can I do anything to help myself ?

You cannot do anything to relieve the actual narrowing in your arteries. However, you can improve your general health by taking regular exercise, stopping smoking and reducing the fat in your diet. Your blood pressure should also be measured and kept under control. These actions will help slow down the hardening of the arteries which caused the problem in the first place, and may avoid the need for further treatment in the future.

How effective is angioplasty ?

The effectiveness of angioplasty depends on exactly which type of angioplasty is performed. In general if the artery is only narrowed, and has not totally blocked, then angioplasty is more likely to be successful and any improvement is likely to last longer. If the length of artery to be treated is short (less than 5cms), then angioplasty is likely to be more successful than if a much longer length of artery is diseased and requires treatment. Angioplasty is more likely to be successful in a large artery (iliac arteries in pelvis) versus a small artery (tibial arteries in calf). Other factors that may be important are the amount of plaque and degree of calcification present. Disease at the origin or start of a blood vessel when it branches may jeopardise success. Apart from technical issues related to the angioplasty, factors such as diabetes and thrombophilia are important in ongoing benefits from angioplasty.

A 1 cm long narrowing in a large iliac artery (in the pelvis) supplying the leg, treated by angioplasty is likely to produce a very good result. In contrast a 10cms blockage in a tibial artery in the calf may be very tricky to treat by angioplasty. Overall angioplasty is technically successful in 90-100% of patients, but the late results can be less impressive. For short arterial occlusions in the thigh the angioplasty site can remain open in 60-80% of patients, but the effect on symptoms is frequently poorly investigated. In less suitable arterial disease the benefits of angioplasty may be considerably less. In a study reporting the results of subintimal angioplasty for severe arterial disease in the legs only 25% (25 in 100) of the arteries were still open at 12 months and results were poorer when segments of artery greater than 10cms long were treated (Smith BM et al, 2005). The patency rates (whether the artery is open or not) of angioplasty are important, but what matters to the patient is whether their quality of life is improved. For instance a patent artery after angioplasty may improve walking distance by 100 metres, but the patient may feel almost as much disability as they did before their angioplasty. If the angioplasty does not improve quality of life and decrease the disability suffered by the patient it is worthless, even if the artery is open and the patient can walk a little further on a treadmill. There is some evidence that angioplasty makes minimal difference to quality of life particularly over the longer term (Spronk et al 2008).

A recent study (BASIL, 2005) has compared angioplasty with bypass surgery in patients with severe limb ischaemia (see bypass surgery). In patients who are suitable for both angioplasty and bypass surgery, an angioplasty first strategy had broadly similar outcomes to surgery, although a more recent analysis indicates surgery is a more durable policy in patients with a life expectancy of more than 2 years. Unfortunately, the majority of patients presenting with severe disease (approximately 80%) are not suitable for both strategies and are more likely to require surgery. In general vascular specialists will attempt angioplasty first in place of surgery if there is a reasonable chance of a good outcome. If this fails bypass surgery is still likely to be an option. In the USA, since 1996, there has been a 40% increase in the use of angioplasty in the leg arteries and a 30% decline in open bypass surgery (Nowygrod, 2006).

Other techniques

Cutting balloon angioplasty (using blades on the external balloon surface to score the inside of the artery), laser assisted angioplasty (cutting through and vapourising plaque with a laser), cryoplasty (using freezing) and mechanical devices to remove plaque have all been tried and found wanting in terms of patency rates and superiority over simple balloon angioplasty.

When There Is Need For A Podiatric Surgeon Austin Should Be The Area To Visit

By Minnie Whitley

Podiatric surgeon is simply a podiatric specialist but with higher training and education. To reach the level of being called a surgeon in the field of podiatry requires extra training and several years of experience. Like ordinary podiatrists these surgeons specialize in carrying out surgeries on feet, ankles, and the lower extremity. They may also diagnose problems, prescribe medicines and medication procedures, and also treat such disorders.

These surgeons make the only medical specialists whose specialty lies in performing surgical procedures on ankles and feet. This gives them much use in the contemporary society hence when one needs an elegant podiatric surgeon Austin offers the best location to go to. The location is packed with highly qualified podiatrists with years of experience and high training. As such, they offer reliable and excellent services to their patients.

To become a professional in podiatry, early preparation is necessary to be properly prepared for the strict rules implemented in the professional. An undergraduate degree that takes four years in a university is one of the academic qualifications required. The undergraduate course should cover courses relevant to podiatry such as chemistry, physics, anatomy, and biology among others. A bachelor degree is important because some podiatric schools do not accept candidates without it.

After successful graduation from the four years of undergraduate work, the next step is the getting into a podiatric medical school for another four years. Admission into these schools gets tougher every year making merit the key factor considered when choosing candidates. An application is required from the and like other medical schools like orthopedic having extra qualifications may be useful. Having elegant co-curricular capabilities add an advantage to applications.

When the four years of studies in podiatric school are over, one is required to apply for hospital based surgical residency. Most residency programs last between three and four years even though some people may choose to extend the period. Completion of the residency program marks the start of one to practice as a podiatrist. In Austin practitioners are given licenses to practice their career legally. Some choose to get employed while others venture in private practice.

However, at this level the practitioner may not have the required training to perform surgeries on people. Their training is considered not sufficient yet. Extra classes and research in this field of medicine is required for one to become a surgeon of podiatry. The regulatory board concerned with podiatrists in USA determines when one gains the rank of surgeon in podiatry.

Among the conditions and disorders handled by these professionals include congenital deformities, heel pain, skin and nail disorders, nerve entrapments, structural deformities, and trauma-caused injuries among others. The level of training they have permits them to take care of joints, tendons, bones, and muscles in lower extremity. Their work encompasses all age groups and on animals sometimes.

Practitioners in different places have different working conditions. Some work with athletes and soccer players on fields whereas others work on battle zones with soldiers. In ordinary settings, they have an office but they spend most time theaters.

EARPHONES PREVENTION IS KEY

According to American Osteopathic Association , the type of hearing loss due to headphone use is typically gradual, cumulative and without obvious warning signs. A hearing test and a medical examination are the only way to truly diagnose hearing damage.

Also, the type of hearing loss caused by over exposure to very loud noise is irreversible, making prevention paramount. Hearing aids and implants can help in amplifying sounds and making it easier to hear, but they are merely compensating for the damaged or nonworking parts of the ear.
               PREVENTION IS BEST

According to Dr. Foy of the American Osteopathic Association, you should only use MP3 devices at levels up to 60% of maximum volume for a total of 60 minutes a day.
The louder the volume, the shorter your duration should be. At maximum volume, you should listen for only about five minutes a day. This, he calls the 60/60 rule.

            IF YOU MUST USE EARPHONES

But...if you must use earphones, here are some tips to help save your ears and you from all the hazards of using earphones could bring:

• Avoid using tiny headphones/earphones that directly go into the ear canals. Better those big headphones, the old ones which stay outside your ears.

 • Avoid sharing your earphones/headphones with others.

• Make sure you change the sponge cover/rubber cover of your head/earphones once a month. If your head/earphones doesn't have sponge covers, make sure you sanitize them.

• Do not use head/earphones when you are traveling by car, train, metro or even walking.

• No loud music ever when you use head/earphones.

NOTE
All these are for your own health benefits. Be careful. Whether using headphones or earphones, moderation is key.

Is Cardio Better Before Weights Or Afterwards

By Russ Howe

There are many questions in the fitness world which cause much confusion. If you were to ask ten fitness instructors for tips on how to lose weight, it's likely you'd get several very conflicting answers. Today's question in focus is this - should you do cardio before or after weights?

The facts behind this question are very clear so today you will discover the answer.
The video today will explain whether you should do cardio before or after weights in the gym.

Let us begin by looking at the most common myth associated with this question. Many people believe that by doing cardiovascular exercise before resistance training you will leave your muscles zapped of strength and restrict your ability on the weights, therefore it would make natural sense to go with hitting the weights first and doing your cardiovascular activity at the end.

This particular belief stacks up well from a common sense point of view, but when you look at the latest scientific research available you will be surprised at the findings.

You see, in order to get to the bottom of this popular gym myth we have no choice but to look at things on a scientific level. The body makes several noteworthy changes during your time on the gym floor, some of which are hugely important in answering this question. The first of which is m-TOR release.

This is the enzyme responsible for signalling the start of the muscle building process after a heavy weights session. It is not uncommon to see this name on the front of various protein supplements, which all claim to cause an increase in m-TOR release to help you build more lean muscle after a hard workout. The body increases m-TOR for up to six hours after a resistance workout, making it easier for you to build lean muscle temporarily.

During aerobic activity, such as a bike or treadmill, the body adapts by releasing an enzyme called AMPK.

Ready for the controversial bit? AMPK release kills m-TOR dead in it's tracks!

So jumping on a bike for 30 minutes of cardiovascular exercise after a workout might sound good in theory, but in truth you are doing more harm than good to your chances of building rock hard lean muscle any time soon. The increase in your AMPK levels will do significant damage to the increased m-TOR you created by hitting the weights, rendering your session only half as great as it could have been.

It is also worth noting that several studies have looked into just how much pre workout cardio can zap the muscles of strength, too. One study tested this theory by having subjects do a tough aerobic session followed by a bench press and squat session. The cardio only affected the squats, which prompted the conclusion that you can get around this issue by simply avoiding cardio activity before leg day - this allows you to get the full benefits of cardio without missing out on the full benefits of the spike in m-TOR brought about by a heavy weights session.

Learning how to lose weight can be a confusing path, with many conflicting opinions often causing confusion along the way. The next time somebody asks should you do cardio before or after weights, you can help the with the latest scientific research rather than gym myths.

Why Hiring Portland Midwife Is A Good Thing To Most Expectant Women

By Gwen Lowe

After a matrimonial wedding of couples, they are always in expecting mood to have children. This is true in many communities where children are considered a blessing from God. Mostly, children enhance the strong bond between couples and they also bring a lot of happiness in their lives. When the period to give birth approaches, couples always ensures they have the support of midwives to help them conceive safely. The services of Portland midwife ensure the process proceeds first and safely.

For this reason, it is therefore imperative to understand who the midwives are. This would be good especially for people who do not know midwives. To begin with, midwives are medical specialists who have much knowledge in labor pains, childbirth and normal pregnancies. The greatest responsibility of midwives is to look for the expectant women and their children or newborns.

Many people admire to know up to when the midwives would stay with them. Most midwives would take care of the pregnant women until they give birth to their beautiful children. However, they would stay with you and the child for not more than 28 days. Within this time, they would give every care to your child and help them with the environment suitable for their growth during this time.

You would need to know that there are two types of midwives. There is the hospital midwives and the community midwives. Hospital midwives are those who work in the hospital environment in most of their time. They would work in the antenatal clinics, postnatal, wards, and labor wards as well. Moreover, you would also find them in the birth centers and childbirth consultant units.

Community midwives work with pregnant women in their respective homes. This means that pregnant women would not need to look for these specialists, but the vice versa. Most women would call in these midwives when they are in their labor-intensive stage at their homes. The midwives would them go with the right tools of work to facilitate normal child delivery to the hopeful mother.

What you would realize is that midwives are more open to family issues that doctors are. For this reason, most women would ask them all the questions that they would not otherwise have the courage to ask their doctors. Most of these questions would revolve around family control techniques. Most midwives would be lenient with the expectant women in terms of giving options to choose where they would wish to deliver. While midwives would allow the women to deliver at home, doctors would be categorical in directing them to deliver at the hospital.

In getting the right midwives for you, you ought to think about whether they are enthusiastic for the employment or they are after money. Conceiving an infant is a serious and delicate process that requires the pregnant mother to have great care and attention from midwives. It is therefore to hire midwives with great skills.

You would also need to look for midwives with great experience. Midwives who have worked with pregnant women for many years would provide the most exclusive services. In case you do not have anyone in mind, you may consult your friends for recommendation. Friends and family members would recommend the best midwives to you at such a time.

The Fountain of Youth is Free

by Nina
The Fountain of Youth by Lucas Cranach the Elder
“Researchers are optimistic about recent efforts to delay the effects of aging and, perhaps, extend life spans.

"But at the same time, the scientific community is wary of how quickly these findings are packaged and resold by companies promising a fountain of youth. “It’s probably worse today than it’s ever been,” said Dr. S. Jay Olshansky, a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a research associate at the Center on Aging at the University of Chicago. “As soon as the scientists publish any glimmer of hope, the hucksters jump in and start selling.” —New York Times

I’m not sure why I even opened the New York Times special “Your Money” section on Wednesday—maybe it was because of the cute, colorful illustrations—because this issue was entitled “A Guide to Buying Just About Everything” and buying a lot of stuff isn’t exactly my idea of fun times. But it turned out that the article about what you couldn’t buy—the “just about” part of the issue—was the one that caught my attention. Because, you guessed it, it was about aging, and it was called Science (and Quacks) vs. the Aging Process. Although the article seemed to take a while to get to the point, it basically concluded that you should not spend your money on solutions for delaying aging.

I have to say that nothing in the article was particularly new to me. After all, living with a medical researcher who studies aging, I’m well aware of all the snake oil being peddled out there to people who want an easy fix to the aging “problem." And the fact that there are currently no medications or supplements that have been proven to delay aging is one of the reasons why we never recommend supplements on our blog (though people ask about them all the time). As the article said:

“People are aware of the aging process, and they want to interfere,” Dr. Barzilai said, but he said he thought it was a mistake to turn to Internet remedies. “Some are causing harm. Some, maybe, you couldn’t care less, and some might be even good, but we don’t know that.”

But because I didn’t really know where this article was going with its message, I laughed when I reached the conclusion.

"It is a message Dr. Olshansky echoes — instead of spending money on aging “fixes,” he suggests that people accept the bland prescription doctors have been offering for decades: a healthy diet and exercise. “You don’t need to spend money,” he said. “Maybe a good pair of running or walking shoes would work. Exercise is roughly the only equivalent of a fountain of youth that exists today, and it’s free to everyone.”

Yes, we’re back to the same old basics: a healthy diet and exercise. And yoga can help with those basics. Of course, the asana practice is a wonderful exercise system (see Opening Your Yoga Toolbox) and various yoga practices, including meditation and conscious relaxation, can help with healthy eating (see Yoga for Healthy Eating: An Overview). But this doctor rather typically forgot about another basic: stress management. Because stress causes many age-related diseases, such as heart disease and strokes, using yoga to managing your stress is another important way to stay healthy as you age (see Stress, Your Health, and Yoga), and maybe even extend your life span.

And, yes, especially if you practice yoga at home as I do, all these basics—exercise, practices to support healthy eating, and stress management—are free.

How Effective Bee Venom Therapy Is

By Zelma Hurley

Bees are very useful creatures. Through them, you can get hold of honey that is utilized in various purposes. They are also known to be the main reason why flowers bloom since they bring pollens for fertilization. The honey is utilized for many purposes as well. From this alone, you can safely say that these creatures are a huge help to the way humans live.

Aside from what is mentioned above, the venom from these creatures are also being used for medical treatments. Bee venom therapy is a new found treatment method that is being used in various ways. There is still a need to do more research regarding this first before it can be freely prescribed to other individuals.

Many people are not very good when bees are around. Since these insects have the habit of getting into your face literally, this can be disturbing. It is also a fact that they have a menacingly dangerous sting. So the natural reaction of people would be to drive them away. There are times when this stings can trigger allergic reactions on specific individuals.

There are people who are not blessed with a well rounded immune system. And because of this, allergies surface. There are also different kind. Bee venom allergy is one of the many types. This is also the same substance that is being used to cure several physical conditions. However, there are still debates on the effectiveness of this process.

The venom of the bees are also known to be the main ingredient for the treatment. When your body reacts, this is because of the fact that the substance is unknown. When the substance is first introduced to your body, it would normally resist. But this would eventually change when you are already in the process of getting treated.

Minimal amounts are injected at regular intervals to the patient. The length of the treatment would depend on how severe their reaction to the substance is. The more serious their case is, the longer they have to receive this therapy. If it is not treated, allergies can be life threatening.

Other studies show that it also has a favorable effect for people who are suffering from arthritis. But this is not yet cleared since the test subjects were not humans but animals. The reduction of the pain and the swelling when the venom was injected to a creature that has arthritis yielded positive results. However, there are still no strong grounds that it would also take effect on humans.

You have to know that there are effects when the treatment starts. You are bound to feel something negative in your body. This is the same feeling when you have when there are allergy reactions. So you need to be wary of these types of things. And you have to be sure that you inform your attending physician.

There is a need for you to always ask for advice from your doctor. This way, you would know what you can expect from this treatment. You will also have to be ready about the possible things that you may experience. You also have to know what certain situations when this therapy is not the best choice.

What is Miso Soup

[This is an article written by Barbara L. Minton, a school psychologist, a published author in the area of personal finance, a breast cancer survivor using "alternative" treatments, a born existentialist, and a student of nature. I have extracted it from the web page of  www.naturalnews.com to share with everyone]

Miso is a delicious fermented food that has been eaten in China and Japan for many centuries. Today it is a favorite of health minded people in the West because of its many anti-aging benefits. Miso and other fermented foods and drinks help build up the inner ecosystem and assure the digestive tract is amply supplied with beneficial bacteria. These bacteria help digest, synthesize, and assimilate nutrients so necessary for good health and anti-aging. They also strengthen the immune system, keeping it at the ready to fight infection and cancer.

Miso is a fermented soybean paste with a salty taste, a buttery texture and a unique nutritional profile that make it a versatile condiment for a host of different recipes, and a foundation for traditional miso soup. In addition to soybeans, miso can include rice, barley or wheat.

Miso is made by adding a yeast mold known as koji to soybeans and other ingredients and allowing them to ferment for a period of time ranging from months to years, depending on the specific type of miso being produced. When the fermentation process is completed, the mixture is ground into a paste similar in texture to nut butter.

The color, taste, texture, and saltiness of miso depend on the exact ingredients used and the duration of the fermentation process. Miso can range in color from white to brown. The darker the coloring, the more robust the flavor and saltiness.

Many studies have shown the health benefits of miso on humans and animals. Benefits include reduced risks of breast, lung, prostate, and colon cancer, and protection from radiation. Researchers have found that consuming one bowl of miso soup per day, as do most residents of Japan, can drastically lower the risks of breast cancer.

Miso has a very alkalizing effect on the body and strengthens the immune system to combat infection. Its high antioxidant activity gives it anti-aging properties.

Miso helps the body maintain nutritional balance. It is loaded with other nutrients along with its beneficial bacteria and enzymes. Miso provides protein, vitamin B12, vitamin B2, vitamin E, vitamin K, choline, linoleic acid, lecithin, and dietary fiber. Its high content of the amino acid tryptophan makes miso a good choice right before bedtime. Tryptophan is nature's sleep inducer.

Miso helps preserve skin beauty through its content of linoleic acid, an essential fatty acid that helps skin stay soft and free of pigment.

Miso is a good choice for women with menopausal complaints because it is able to fill estrogen receptors and produce some of the actions of estrogen in the body.

The long, slow process of fermentation needed to break down soy requires more hardy bacteria than is used for other fermented products, contributing the special health benefits of miso. Dr. Hiro Watanabe, an expert in developmental biology and cancer prevention in Japan, conducted several animal and human studies using freeze dried rice miso. His goal was the understanding of how miso protects against cancer, radiation and other diseases.

Dr. Watanabe's studies showed that for cancers like those of the breast and prostate, the ideal length of fermentation was between 6 months and 2 years. He found that miso fermented for 180 days is typically a rich color and has plenty of healthy microflora.

According to Dr. Watanabe's studies, the sodium in miso did not produce adverse effects in people with salt sensitivity and hypertension. For cancer, Dr. Watanabe recommended 3 cups of miso a day. For high blood pressure, he recommended 2 cups, and for relief of menopausal symptoms, he recommended 1 to 3 cups per day. His maintenance amount is 1 cup per day. He noted the beneficial effects of replacing the salt used in food preparation with miso.
